METU EPE: METU English Proficiency Examination. (For further details please see Equivalence Table)

ALES: Turkish post-graduate examination (GRE scores are also valid in the case of international students)

II. Documents required

1- Application Form

After filling out the application form online applicants are required to "Freeze" the form. A "Working Copy" is not valid. No hard copies need to be provided. It is sufficient to complete the application form online and upload copies of the required documents to the application system.

2- ALES or GRE

A valid  ALES/GRE score is required. Applicants must have achieved the minimum acceptable score in order to apply. It is not possible to apply for any other exam.

 

ALES

The academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam is held in Turkey by ÖSYM. Dates of applications may vary. To find out the exact dates and where to apply for this exam please contact the ÖSYM. Website: http://www.osym.gov.tr/

GRE

Graduate Record Examination is available worldwide from the Educational Testing Services based in the USA. To find out exact dates and where to apply for this exam please contact the ETS Website:http://www.ets.org

IMPORTANT NOTICE: For METU master or doctorate students continuing ongoing studies or accepted to a new programme, previous ALES/GRE scores remain valid. In the case of METU students whose studies were interrupted for no longer than one semester, past ALES or GRE scores are still considered valid even though the scores have officially expired.

3-English Proficiency

A valid, recognised English proficiency exam score is required (TOEFL or METU EPE). Photocopy confirmation of the official exam result is required during application. The original copy must be presented during  registration. No printed result is required for applicants who have taken the METU EPE. In such cases, the application number should be provided.

Scores are valid for two years up to the application deadline.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY EXAMS:

TOEFL

"Test of English as a Foreign Language" exam which taken by Educational Testing Services (USA). To find out exact dates and where to apply for this exam please contact the ETS Website: http://www.ets.org/ 

METU-EPE

English Proficiency Exam which taken by METU School of Foreign Languages, prior to the beginning of each semester. Applications are generally in june, september and january. To find out exact dates and where to apply for this exam please contact the  METU Registrar's office  and see the Academic Calendar 

IMPORTANT NOTICES

  • Applications without an accepted METU-EPE/TOEFL score cannot be considered.
  • For METU master or doctorate students continuing ongoing studies or accepted to a new programme, previous English exam scores remain valid for application. In the case of METU students where studies were interrupted for no longer than one semester, past English exam scores are still considered valid even though the scores have officially expired.
  • English proficiency documentation is not required from nationals of countries whose official language is English and who have graduated from an English-medium institute of higher education.

4- Transcript(s) (Authorized by the University or notarised)

  • Obtain transcript(s) in English, notarized or attested, of undergraduate and graduate studies (in progress or completed). Students who have completed their studies should obtain one hard copy of transcript(s). Original transcripts are  required during registration to a new program.
  • METU students are not required to submit a METU transcript, but student ID numbers should be written on the application form.
  • Cumulative GPA(s) is/are required. If you are currently attending a program, specify your cumulative GPA on the basis of the last semester completed.

5- Reference Letters

Two letters of reference are required for the application. METU-IMS recommends the following guidelines for students with respect to citing referees: Senior bachelor students or B.Sc. graduates planning to apply for M.Sc. programmes in Marine Sciences should consider providing reference letters from two faculty members most familiar with their academic skills and experiences. Students planning to apply for a Ph.D. programme should consider providing references from their thesis supervisor and one thesis defence jury members or a faculty member familiar with their academic skills and background. For applicants returning to studies following employment in a specific sector, reference letters may be provided by managers.

Applicants should enter the information regarding the referees in the online application form. The link for submitting a reference letter will be sent to the e-mail address of referee's. The link will be active for 48 hours, if the time limit is passed the link will be expired. Applicants can check the status of references from the online application form. To prevent delays, please inform referees of application deadlines. METU-IMS is not responsible for possible delays.

6- Application Fee Receipt

Applicants, who are still enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate program, do not have to pay an application fee. A student who will apply from outside of METU must upload the student certificate to the application fee section in the online application form. Candidates who cannot upload a student certificate must upload the application fee receipt.

IV. Online Application

Application to METU-IMS Graduate programs will be made online at the link provided below.

  1. Log in to the Online Application System (https://oibs2.metu.edu.tr/Ms_Phd_Applications/) and fill out the required fields in the Application Form. 
  2. Freeze the Online Application Form and the application process is complete. You can check your application status on the Main Page (https://oibs2.metu.edu.tr/Ms_Phd_Applications/) by logging in with your email address and password.

Students of Graduate Programs

Students who will register for the 3rd semester of their program should determine the topic, advisor of their thesis, etc. and submit that information to the Student Affairs Information System before interactive registration.

Students who are in their thesis stage, getting their thesis defence and got additional time for adjustment, should pay their tuition fees and make interactive registration if the last day of the additional time is after the registration period of the new semester.
