Master of Science (MSc.) and Ph.D. Fellowships are offered to suitably qualified candidates in all departments at the Institute of Marine Sciences(IMS), Middle East Technical University. National and overseas students have a high prospect of receiving a monthly fellowship through the IMS participation in national and international projects. Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) offers graduate (MSc. and PhD) degrees in the following fields: Marine Biology and Fisheries, Oceanography and Marine Geology and Geophysics. These graduate programs invite students with the backgrounds in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, statistics, or in any related engineering department.

Students having bacheolar degree can apply to a masters degree and studens who have masters degree can apply to doctorate degree.

The Institute has four Graduate Programs in the fields of:

Required Documents in Application

In the application file,


1- Application Form
After filling out the application form  online, “Freeze” it and print it out as “Final Copy”. The print out should be signed as a photograph appended on. A “Working Copy” is not valid.  The print out of the application form will be submitted together with the other required documents in a closed envelope. Therefore, filling out the online form does not mean that you completed the application.

2- ALES or GRE
A valid and acceptable photocopy  of GRE/ALES score is required. An applicant should have the minimum acceptable score from the exam to complete the application. It is not possible to apply by using any other exam.

GRE score reports are valid for five years. ALES score repots are valid for three years.


ALES

Given in Turkey twice a year by ÖSYM. Dates of applications may vary, though generally it is within first half of October and first half of March. GRE

Given world wide by Educational Testing Services based in USA. Computerized test is given within first week of application and the result generally requires a month, please link to http://www.ets.org/ (in Ankara,contact Turkish American Association Cinnah Cad. No 20 phone: +90 312 426 26 44)

 These scores are showing the approximate values. ALES and GRE weighted scores (averages and standard deviations) may vary by small amounts from year to year.


3- Language Requirement
A valid and acceptable English qualifying exam score is required (TOEFL, METU-EPE, and IELTS).  Photocopy of the official exam result should be presented. The original copy is needed during the registration. No photocopy is necessary if you applied with METU-EPE (English Proficiency Examination). In such a case, application candidate number  should be provided.

TOEFL

METU-EPE

 Given at METU Ankara by METU School of Foreign Languages. It takes place prior to beginning of each semester. Applications are generally in June, September, and January. Please link to METU Registrar's office

IELTS

IMPORTANT NOTE: Application without acceptable METU-EPE/IELTS/TOEFL score is not possible.

NOT: If you are a masters or a doctorate student in METU and accepted for the same program or a different programme within the last four semesters, your past English scores are still valid for the application for a new programme.


4- Transcript(s) (authorized by the university or notary)
Obtain transcript(s) (in English), notarized or attested, concerning your undergraduate and graduate study (in progress or completed, if any) you have undertaken. If you have completed your study, you should obtain two copies of transcript(s). One copy is sufficient for application; the other copy is required during registration when you are accepted to the program. 
METU students are not required to submit a METU transcript, but they should indicate their student ID numbers on their application form.

Cumulative GPA(s) is required. If you are currently attending a program, specify your cumulative GPA on the basis of the last semester you have completed.

5- Two reference letters 
For the application, two reference letters are required. The METU-IMS recommends you to take referees as follows; if you are a senior bachelor student or a graduate planning to apply for Master of Marine Sciences, consider taking the reference letters from two faculty members who best know your academic skills and experiences; if you are planning to apply for PhD program, consider taking one from your thesis advisor and the other from your thesis committee members or a faculty member who knows your academic skills and experiences. If you are working in any sector, you may consider taking reference letters from your boss or managers.

A standard reference letter format can be found in the "References" link. Letters should be offered to the referees in two closed small envelopes. After filled out by the referees, the two envelopes must be sealed and signed on the adhesion line. The referee may request to send the letter directly to IMS. To prevent the delays, please inform the referees about the application deadlines. IMS is not responsible for possible delays.

 6- Bank Receipt of Application Fee :
Application fee should be paid to the bank account or transferred and the bank receipt should be presented along with the other documents. Money order, cashier's check, cash money or any other payment type cannot be accepted. Application fee sent by such payment types are not accepted and these applications are considered incomplete.

For each program applied a separate application fee should be submitted.

Application dates are scheduled on the Academic Calendar. In general, the application follow:

How to Apply?

The application should be done online.
An e-mail address is required for application. If you do not have an e-mail address already, apply to e-mail address providers on the internet. Make sure that the address you obtain remains valid for at least 6 months. 


If it is the first time you apply for a graduate program, you have to obtain an 'application number' and an 'entry code' to proceed to on-line application. You can follow-up the progress of your application at the on-line application pages using your application number and entry code. 
It is highly recommended that you use Internet Explorer or Mozilla while filling out the form. When you click on the link of the Online Application Program, it is possible that you will receive a warning message. You can proceed by clicking on the “proceed anyway” icon. 


Online application form consists of 7 parts. Each part can be reached by clicking on the link provided. The print out of the application form will be submitted together with the other required documents in a closed envelope. Therefore, filling out the online form does not mean that you completed the application.When you finish application process, you should FREEZE the application after checking that all is correct and there is no omitted item, you should take a print out and stick your own photograph on it, after all you should bring/send it with other documents required so that they will be brought/sent before the last day of the application to the below address;

When your materials (if there is any missing document or procedure) are received by the Institute of Marine Sciences you will be notified about the receipt of your application within 7-10 days via e-mail. Starting On-line Application

By clicking the online application the application can be started. To obtain 'entry code' and 'application number' "obtain entry code" button must be clicked and the required information must be filled in. The personal entry code and application number provided for you will be sent by e-mail to you. Those numbers and e-mail should be kept confidentially for your security.

1- Personal Information
On the first page all personal information asked should be filled in the format shown. Unless designated otherwise, foreign applicants are needed to type their passport numbers to file named "TC Kimlik No". These information should be the same as given in Identification card/passport. If there is any change in personal information (i.e surname change) it should be notified. A permanent address should be given, since the results are sent to applicants by mail. (You can follow-up your application success via e-mailing to admin@ims.metu.edu.tr address).
Middle section refers to Turkish citizens and therefore should be left blank by foreigners. 


2- Academic Information
Enter the necessary information concerning the universities, institutes, and colleges etc. that were previously attended and are currently attending. Enter in chronological order starting with the most recent one. Specify dates of entrance and completion with degrees (B.S., M.S., certificates). If the program is not finished yet, give the intended date of completion. 
Cumulative GPA(s) for the programs should be entered, specifying the base-value (e.g., 3.70/4.00 or 73/100). If you are currently attending a program, specify your cumulative GPA on the basis of the last semester you have completed.

 3-Graduate Examinations
A valid and acceptable photocopy  of GRE/ALES score is required.

4- English Examinations
A valid and acceptable English qualifying exam score is required (TOEFL, METU-EPE, and IELTS).


5- Employment Information
Any working-experience including Military Service will be indicated in the relevant field in the format shown on the pages. 


6- Program to be applied 
The desired program or department to be applied should be selected. The specific area of interest under the major fields of research (oceanography, marine biology and fisheries, marine geology and geophysics) can be added in detail if necessary.


7- Reference Letters 
Two reference letters are required for the application.

8- Letter of Intention 
The letter of intention should include a short CV and the background related to the applied department, the awards, the scholarships, meetings, publications. The letter of intention should be in on-line application form. If the given space is not sufficient the applicants can use extra pages. 


9- Source of Support 
Indicate the source of financial support for the duration of your program. If you have a scholarship or supported by an institution, attach a letter indicating the amount and duration of the support. The cost including tuition fee and other expenses ranges from $6,000-10,000 per annum, so the support whether in the form of scholarship or otherwise should be sufficient to cover these expenses for the duration of the program. 

10- Checking the Information 
Having finished the session(s), use "CHECK" button to see that all the information is correct and no item is omitted/missing. If the form is in its final form, "FREEZE" the form. Please note that no further input/editing is possible once the FREEZE button is used. 
After 'Freeze' the application by using 'Print' button (or using internet browser; file-print), a clear print-out of 'Final Copy' must be taken. A photograph must be affixed on it and the last page must be signed. This signature on the Final Copy means that the information both on the print-out and on the online version on the computer are the same and accurate. The information on the print-out and on the online version must be exactly the same. For this reason, no changes must be made on the print-out.

For each program applied a separate file should be submitted.

What to do Afterwards and for Follow-up?

The application results are announced (accepted/rejected) at the www.ims.metu.edu.tr website under ‘Announcements’ page within the respective dates.

  • Information about health insurance: All international students (except for the scholarship students) will be insured by the Republic of Turkey, Social Security Instituition (SSI). Students should pay about 100 TL monthly to SSI after the completion of their registration.

How to Register?

Students Who will Register to Their Program for the First Time: 
After submitting the required documents, students should decide which scientist to study with. Student and the scientist (which then will be the advisor of the student) should reach an agreement to work together in the future. Then, the student with his/her adviser decide the courses he/she must take. After this, they should make interactive registration. Interactive registrations will be done by using http://register.metu.edu.tr  URL address. During registration, please do not open more than one screen at one time. Doing so may cause to loss of information or the program may fail to register the courses.

Students Continuing Their Program: Students are supposed to renew their registration each semester within the registration period announced in the Academic Calendar. Registration renewal is composed of during the processes below:

  • Tuition fee payment
  • Interactive registration
  • Advisor approval

Note: Registration program will be open to access out of the campus only after 14:00 on the first day of registration.

Important Note: In case of one of the processes (Tuition fee payment, Interactive registration, Advisor approval) is incomplete, the student will stay in “not-registered” status. The students who have not completed their registration in the Registration period will not be able to register in the Add-drop period. These not-registered students can apply to the Administrative Committee of the relevant unit until the last day of the Add-drop period (they should also indicate and prove their excuse) for a registration renewal. Those whose excuses are accepted by the Administrative Committee allowed to renew their registration; and others, whose excuses are not accepted, will stay not-registered and lose their student status. The ones who have lost their student status due to incomplete registration may be allowed to register for the next semester by the decision of the Administrative Committee of the relevant unit, for only once, with the condition of the payment of tuition fee of the not-registered semester with fine. In such a case, the lost period in the not-registered semester is counted for the education period.”

Post-doctoral research

 

The Institute of Marine Sciences offers opportunities to all scientists around the globe to pursue a post-doctoral research in the field of oceanography. The post-doctoral positions in the Institute of Marine Sciences are competitive and require strong experience and knowledge in the field of marine sciences. Applications for post-doctoral researcher positions are accepted all year round and applicants should contact with the concerning scientists in their respective field of research directly. When available, post-doctoral positions may be announced at the announcements page of the institute’s web site.

Summer practice/Internship

 

Institute of Marine Sciences, METU, provides internship opportunities for the enthusiastic undergraduate students who would like to gain some background and experience about marine sciences.

Institute of Marine Sciences is a graduate school under Middle East Technical University, conducts research under four major areas. In each area of research, IMS-METU studies different properties of the marine environment. The scientific research are supported by national and international project fundings. Reasearch is held through theoretically and practically, both in the laboratory environment and on the scientific research vessel possessed by the institute.

METU-Institute of Marine Sciences offers internship opportunities twice a year, in the summer and winter periods, to the undergraduate applicants. The successful applicants are welcome to extend their knowledge in the area of their interest.

Middle East Technical University, Institute of Marine Sciences accepts interns twice a year.

Following evaluation of internship applications during December (for the winter period), and applications during April  (for the summer period), the applicants are informed about the success of their application.

Application

Applications should be done in two ways,
1. Applicants should write a letter either personally or by the internship commission of their own institution which states their will to attend winter/summer practice. The letters should be sent to IMS-METU mail address as:

2. Applicants should send a fax to 0 324 5212327 and state their will to attend a summer/winter practice in IMS-METU.

Campus Facilities

Housing
The applicants should supply accommodation by themselves. IMS-METU is not responsible for housing. 

Work hours
The applicants should respect that, in weekdays, the working hours are from 08:30 to 17:30. Between 12:00 and 13:00 is the lunch break. 
Catering
In week days, there is lunch service at the institute’s cafeteria. The food is charged.
Transportation
Interns can use the institute’s service in the morning (from Mersin to institute) and at night (from institute to Mersin). 
NOT: The internships that the institute offers are free of charge and the institute will not pay any salary in return.
